Adwords for Mobile

in Advertising, Search Engine Marketing, Technology No Comments

For you SEM managers and planners alike, Google just introduced Adwords for Mobile.   SEM professionals now have access to their accounts’ key alerts and statistics, enabling them the ability to make quick changes even when they’re away from their computers.

Adwords for mobile can be customized based on each user’s account preferences and allows users to view and make basic edits to campaigns and keywords.  If more advanced edits are needed, simply switch to the desktop version of AdWords through a link at the bottom of the screen.  I personally found it to be quite helpful in a pinch.

How 13 Big Tech Firms Got Their Names

in Just for fun, Technology No Comments

via newser

Highlights:
1. SUN Microsystems: An acronym for Stanford University Network, the school where the founders met.

2. Cisco: Not an acronym, as often assumed. It’s just San Francisco without the San Fran, which is why the “c” was not capitalized originally.

3. Apple: The company was late in filing for a name and trademark, and Steve Jobs issued an ultimatum: Come up with something better than Apple. Didn’t happen.

4. Microsoft: Makes MICROcomputer SOFTware.

5. Oracle: The company grew out of a CIA project codenamed “Oracle” that was ditched. The founders took the name and ran.

6. Sony: “Doesn’t mean anything in Japanese, and there is no Mr Sony.” Founder Akio Morita was just trying not to alienate foreign customers. His pick comes from “sonus,” Latin for sound, combined with the popular expression “sonny boy.”

7. Google: The founders had settled on “googol,” a one with 100 zeroes after it, to signify their ambitions. But an early investor (one of those SUN guys, again) wrote “Google” on a check. So they changed the name so they could cash it.

Yahoo! “Sketch-A-Search” App

in Search Engine Marketing, Social Media, Technology No Comments

Not to be outdone in the iPhone apps department, Yahoo! is getting onboard with a few additional apps of their own.  Yahoo!’s recently launched Sketch-A-Search and Yahoo! Search App take Google’s Mobile App to the next level.

The Sketch-A-Search allows users to quickly find restaurants (other categories to launch on an ongoing basis) simply by drawing a circle around the general area on a map.  This comes in handy when you have neither the zip code nor the name of the area where you’re searching.  Once an area of the map is identified, a list of restaurants appears on the screen; by clicking on a restaurant one can read reviews, see pictures, prices and can even narrow down by type of cuisine, ambience and/or rating.  It’s fun to play with too.

The Yahoo! Search App offers “a fast and beautiful experience that integrates voice search, embedded maps, and information from Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Movies, Yahoo! News, and other sources that appears directly in the results.”
